Description

Jacob is an exceptional selection from Germany's renowned Helleborus Gold Collection® (HGC), prized for being one of the very earliest hellebores to bloom—often flowering as early as November. Its large, pure white, outward-facing flowers with showy golden-yellow stamens create a stunning contrast against compact mounds of glossy, dark green, serrated evergreen foliage. As the blooms age, they gradually take on soft pink tones in cool weather and pale green in warmer conditions. This compact, vigorous, and long-lived perennial brings festive elegance to the winter shade garden, containers, and holiday displays when little else is in bloom.

Quick Facts

  • Foliage & Flowers: Glossy, leathery, dark green, serrated leaves form a compact, mounded clump; large (3 in/8 cm), single, outward-facing, pure white flowers with prominent golden-yellow stamens, aging to soft pink or pale green
  • Mature Height: 8-12 inches (foliage); flower stems rise slightly above
  • Mature Spread: 12-18 inches
  • Growth Rate: Slow
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA 4-9
  • Light Requirement: Partial shade to full shade; tolerates some sun
  • Core Benefits: Exceptionally early winter bloom time, pristine white flowers, compact habit, deer and rabbit resistant, evergreen foliage, long-lived, low maintenance
  • Best Uses: Woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting, containers, holiday displays, mass plantings, cut flowers (float in bowls)

Faqs

Q: When does 'HGC Jacob' bloom, and how long do the flowers last?
A: It blooms remarkably early, from November through January—often in time for Christmas. Individual flowers are long-lasting, persisting for many weeks and gradually changing color as they age.

Q: How should I care for it to ensure the best display?
A: In late winter (just as new flower buds emerge), cut back any old, tattered foliage to the ground. This improves air circulation and showcases fresh flowers. Apply mulch in autumn and a general fertilizer in spring. Avoid overwatering.

Q: Can it be grown in containers?
A: Yes, it is an excellent container specimen. Use a deep pot with excellent drainage and rich, well-draining potting mix. Container plants require more consistent moisture and benefit from winter protection in colder zones. Perfect for bringing indoors temporarily to enjoy blooms.

Q: How cold hardy is it?
A: It is reliably hardy in USDA zones 4-9. In the coldest zones (4-5), a protective winter mulch is beneficial.

Q: How does it differ from other Christmas roses?
A: 'HGC Jacob' stands out for its exceptionally early bloom time (often November), large outward-facing flowers, and compact, well-branched habit that remains tidy without pruning.
