Description

Pink Jasmine is a spectacular, fast-growing evergreen vine known for its breathtaking winter-to-spring floral display. In late winter, it produces masses of reddish-pink buds that open to a profusion of small, star-shaped, intensely fragrant white flowers, literally covering the plant. It is a vigorous climber that can quickly cover fences, trellises, or arbors. Important Note: While stunning, it is listed as an invasive plant in California and other warm climates due to its prolific seeding and aggressive growth, which can smother native vegetation.

  • Spectacular Winter-Spring Bloom: Flowers en masse from late winter into spring, with red buds opening to fragrant white stars.

  • Extremely Vigorous Climber: A fast grower that can reach 15-25 feet, quickly creating a dense screen or covering.

  • Intensely Fragrant: The flowers have a powerful, sweet scent that can fill an entire garden.

  • Highly Invasive in California: Listed as an invasive species by the California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC). It reseeds prolifically and can escape cultivation.

  • Not Recommended for Planting: Due to its significant ecological impact, it is strongly discouraged for planting in California gardens. Choose non-invasive alternatives.

Faqs

Q: What is a good non-invasive alternative for a fragrant white vine?
A: Consider Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), which is evergreen, beautifully fragrant, well-behaved, and not invasive. Madagascar Jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda) is another excellent option for containers or warm greenhouses.

Q: I already have it. How can I control it?
A: To prevent spread, prune off all spent flower clusters before they set seed. Be vigilant in pulling up seedlings. Consider replacing it with a non-invasive vine to protect local ecosystems.
