Description

Purple Trailing Lantana is a vigorous, fast-spreading evergreen groundcover prized for its non-stop display of lavender-purple flower clusters and exceptional drought tolerance. It forms a dense mat of slightly rough, aromatic foliage, from which masses of small, pale purple flowers with white or yellow centers bloom profusely from spring through fall. It thrives in intense heat, full sun, and poor soils, making it ideal for covering slopes, spilling over walls, or filling difficult dry areas. Important Note: It is considered invasive in many warm climates, including parts of California and Florida, due to its prolific seeding and rapid spread.

  • Long Blooming Groundcover: Flowers almost continuously with clusters of lavender-purple and white blooms from spring until frost.

  • Fast-Spreading & Drought Tolerant: Quickly forms a dense, low mat (1-2 ft tall, spreading 3-10 ft) that thrives with minimal water once established.

  • Extreme Heat & Salt Tolerance: Excellently adapted to hot, sunny, coastal, and arid conditions.

  • Important Invasive Risk: Listed as invasive in many regions. Its berries are spread by birds, allowing it to colonize natural areas and outcompete native plants. Use sterile cultivars or plant with extreme caution.

  • Attracts Butterflies: A reliable nectar source for butterflies.

Faqs

Q: Is there a sterile (non-invasive) alternative?
A: Yes. Look for sterile cultivars like those in the 'Bandana' or 'Luscious®' series(e.g., 'Luscious® Grape'), which produce few to no seeds and are much safer garden choices.

Q: How do I control its spread in my garden?
A: If planting the species, use deep root barriers and prune back vigorously after flowering to prevent berry set. However, containment is difficult, and choosing a sterile cultivar is highly recommended.
