Description

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote Blue' is one of the world's most beloved and iconic English lavender cultivars, prized for its exceptionally deep violet-blue flowers, compact mound-forming habit, and intense, classic lavender fragrance . This award-winning perennial forms a dense, tidy, silver-gray to gray-green foliage mound. From late spring to early summer, it produces an abundance of short, sturdy spikes of richly colored, deep violet-blue flowers that rise just above the foliage, creating a stunning, uniform display . Unlike some lavenders, it has a single, heavy bloom period, but the flower color is exceptionally rich, and the fragrance is unmatched. The aromatic flowers and foliage are highly prized for essential oils, culinary uses (baking, teas, herb blends), sachets, and potpourri. With its compact, dwarf habit, excellent cold hardiness, drought and heat tolerance, and deer resistance, it is an outstanding choice for low hedges, borders, rock gardens, containers, and mass plantings, and it holds the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit .

Faqs

Q: How is Hidcote Blue different from other English lavenders?
A: It is known for its exceptionally deep, rich violet-blue flower color, compact dwarf habit (1-2 ft), and one of the strongest, most classic lavender fragrances. Unlike some lavenders, it has a single heavy bloom period (not reblooming).

Q: Does Hidcote rebloom?
A: It has a single, heavy bloom period in late spring to early summer. While it may produce occasional sporadic flowers, it does not reliably rebloom like some hybrid lavenders.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: For the densest growth, best flower color, and strongest fragrance, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Once established, it is drought tolerant. Water regularly during its first year, then little to no supplemental water is needed. It requires well-drained soil and will not tolerate wet feet.

Q: Is it good for cooking?
A: Yes, English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the preferred species for culinary use. 'Hidcote Blue' has excellent flavor and fragrance for baking (shortbread, cakes), teas, herb blends (herbes de Provence), and infused honey or sugar.
