Description

Amazing Red New Zealand Flax is a bold, compact variety that makes a dramatic statement with its intense, wine-red foliage. The upright, arching leaves are a consistent, deep burgundy-red, holding their color well in both sun and shade. Its smaller size and rich color make it incredibly versatile for adding a punch of dark contrast to mixed plantings, modern garden designs, or containers. Exceptionally tough and low-care, it thrives with neglect and brings year-round architectural interest.

  • Deep Burgundy-Red Foliage: Boasts upright, strappy leaves in a saturated, dark red-burgundy hue that provides excellent color contrast.

  • Dwarf, Well-Behaved Habit: A smaller cultivar perfect for limited spaces, front-of-border plantings, or patio pots.

  • Color Stable in Sun or Shade: Maintains its rich red color well in both full sun and partial shade, offering flexibility in placement.

  • Extremely Drought & Wind Tolerant: Once established, it survives on minimal water and handles exposed, coastal sites with ease.

  • Ideal for Contrast & Design: Its dark foliage pairs beautifully with silver, blue, lime-green, or orange plants.

Faqs

Q: How do I keep it looking tidy?
A: Simply pull or cut old, brown, or damaged leaves from the base of the plant as needed. Avoid cutting into the healthy green/red part of the leaf, as this can create an entry point for disease.

Q: How cold hardy is it?
A: Most New Zealand flaxes are hardy to around 15-20°F (-9 to -7°C). In Zone 9a, it is fully hardy. Protect the crown with mulch in an unusually severe freeze.
