Description

Wheeler's Dwarf Japanese Mock Orange is a robust, low-growing workhorse shrub, valued for its incredibly dense, spreading habit of deep green, leathery leaves. It forms a broad, weed-suppressing mound that is exceptionally tough against salt, wind, and drought. In spring, it offers the bonus of fragrant white flowers. This reliable, no-fuss evergreen is ideal for mass plantings on slopes, as a low, wide hedge, or for stabilizing banks in challenging coastal or urban landscapes.

  • Dense, Wide-Spreading Habit: Grows into a very dense, low, and broadly spreading mound, typically 2-3 ft tall but 4-5 ft wide or more.

  • Excellent Groundcover: Its thick foliage effectively suppresses weeds and is superb for erosion control on slopes.

  • Extremely Tough & Coastal-Hardy: One of the toughest cultivars, highly resistant to salt spray, wind, drought, and poor soils.

  • Fragrant Spring Flowers: Produces the classic clusters of sweetly scented, creamy-white flowers in late spring.

  • Low Maintenance: Requires virtually no pruning to maintain its form and thrives on neglect once established.

Faqs

Q: Can it be used as a low hedge?
A: Yes, it makes an excellent, dense low hedge or border. Space plants about 3 feet apart, center to center. Its natural width means it fills in quickly to form a solid, low barrier.

Q: How does it differ from 'Cream de Mint'?
A: 'Wheeler's Dwarf' is all-green, wider-spreading, and faster-growing, used more for functional groundcover. 'Cream de Mint' is variegated, more compactly rounded, and slower, used more as an ornamental accent.
