Description

Salvia greggii 'Red' is a beloved, semi-evergreen perennial prized for its profuse, velvety, bright red flowers, long bloom season, and compact, mounding habit. This popular autumn sage forms a dense, well-branched, bushy mound of small, narrow, linear to lance-shaped, soft to bright green leaves with whitish, hairy undersides, releasing a light, pleasant fragrance (sometimes fruity, reminiscent of peaches) when brushed. From late spring through summer and into fall, it produces an abundance of upright, slender stems bearing large, two-lipped, tubular, velvety red flowers with a prominent, darker red calyx, creating a striking, long-lasting display. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With its compact size, excellent heat and drought tolerance once established, deer resistance, and very long bloom season, it is an outstanding choice for sunny borders, rock gardens, mass plantings, containers, and water-wise landscapes. Note: It is not frost-hardy and requires protection in colder climates.
