Description

Blue-Eyed Grass is a charming and resilient California native wildflower that brings delicate, star-like beauty to the early season garden. Despite its name, it is not a true grass but a member of the iris family. It forms low, grassy clumps of slender, flat, green leaves. From late winter into spring, it produces a profusion of small, upward-facing, violet-blue flowers, each with a bright yellow center. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and easy to grow, it is perfect for naturalizing in meadows, rock gardens, or along sunny, well-drained paths.

  • Delicate Violet-Blue & Yellow Flowers: Produces an abundance of small, star-shaped flowers in vibrant violet-blue with a cheerful yellow eye.

  • Early Season Native Bloomer: One of the first plants to flower, providing vital early nectar for native bees and other pollinators.

  • Extremely Drought Tolerant & Low-Water: Once established, it thrives with little to no summer water, making it ideal for water-wise landscapes.

  • Grassy, Clumping Foliage: Forms neat, low tufts of iris-like leaves that remain semi-evergreen in mild climates.

  • Excellent for Naturalizing: Self-seeds gently to form charming drifts in meadows, between stepping stones, or in native plant gardens.

Faqs

Q: Does it go dormant in summer?
A: Yes, it is summer deciduous. After flowering and setting seed, the foliage will typically brown and die back as a natural adaptation to drought. It will re-emerge with the winter rains. You can cut back the dry foliage in late summer/fall.

Q: Will it spread aggressively?
A: It can self-seed moderately in favorable conditions (open, well-drained soil) but is not considered invasive. Seedlings are easy to identify and relocate or thin out if desired. It forms clumps and will not overtake a garden.
