Description

Anthony Waterer Japanese Spirea is a classic, hardy deciduous shrub valued for its long season of colorful foliage and flat clusters of vibrant pink flowers. Its leaves emerge with a creamy yellow and pink variegation, maturing to a blue-green with irregular cream edges. From early to midsummer, it produces flattened clusters of deep carmine-pink flowers that attract butterflies. This reliable, low-maintenance shrub adds texture and color to borders, foundations, or mass plantings.

  • Long Blooming Summer Flowers: Produces showy, flat-topped clusters of deep pink flowers from early to midsummer, often with a lighter rebloom.

  • Colorful Variegated Foliage: New leaves are tinged with cream and pink, maturing to blue-green edged in creamy white, providing multi-season interest.

  • Compact, Mounded Habit: Forms a dense, rounded shrub, typically reaching 3-5 feet tall and wide.

  • Tough & Low Maintenance: Extremely adaptable to a wide range of soils, drought-tolerant once established, and requires minimal pruning. Deer resistant.

  • Attracts Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers are attractive to butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Faqs

Q: How should I prune it to keep it looking its best?
A: For optimal flowering and a compact shape, prune in late winter or early spring. You can cut the entire shrub back to about 6-12 inches from the ground. It flowers on new wood, so this hard pruning encourages vigorous new growth and more blooms.

Q: Will it tolerate full sun?
A: Yes, it thrives in full sun for the best flower production and most vibrant foliage color. It can tolerate light afternoon shade but may become leggy and flower less in too much shade.
