For local plant professionals, we’re always glad to connect and explore ways to support your customers.

The June Plum, or Ambarella, is a fast-growing tropical marvel that delivers a uniquely complex and refreshing flavor. This statuesque tree produces large clusters of olive-shaped fruit that transition from crunchy and tart when green to soft and sweet when golden-yellow. Its flavor is a fascinating symphony of green mango, pineapple, citrus, and a hint of resin, making it a versatile star in both savory and sweet dishes. While it can become a large tree, its open, spreading canopy provides excellent shade, and its prolific nature ensures a generous harvest for adventurous palates.

  • Prized for its complex, multi-layered flavor that evolves dramatically with ripeness, offering a different taste experience at each stage.

  • Fruit is borne in large, showy clusters on long stalks, creating a striking ornamental display.

  • A very fast-growing, briefly deciduous tree that can provide quick shade and begin fruiting within 2-3 years.

  • Highly versatile in the kitchen, used from the crisp, green stage to the soft, ripe stage.

  • The aromatic leaves are also used in some cuisines for seasoning.

  • Prefers a warm, tropical climate but can withstand brief, light frosts once mature.

Flavor Profile:

  • Green (Unripe): Crisp, very tart, and astringent with strong notes of green apple and citrus—perfect for pickling or eating with salt and chili.

  • Yellow (Ripe): Softer, sweeter, and less tart with dominant tropical notes of pineapple and mango, and a unique aromatic finish.

  • Best Uses: Green: Eaten raw with seasoning, made into chutney, pickles, or used in salads. Ripe:Eaten fresh, made into juice, jam, or used in desserts.

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: How do you eat a green June plum?
A: The most common way is to peel it, slice it, and eat it with a sprinkle of salt, chili powder, or a dip made of fish sauce and chili. It's a popular savory snack in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, much like green mango.

Q: Is the seed edible?
A: No, the large, fibrous central seed is not edible. The edible part is the firm flesh that surrounds it. When ripe, the flesh can be scooped away from the seed.

Q: How large does the tree get, and can I control it?
A: In ideal conditions, it can reach 40-60 feet tall with a broad canopy. However, it responds very well to pruning and can be maintained at a much smaller, manageable size (15-20 ft) with annual trimming after harvest, making it suitable for home gardens.
