Faqs

Q: What are its chilling requirements for flowering in Zone 9a?
A: This is a critical point. Common lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) typically require a prolonged winter chill (many hours below 45°F) to set blooms. In the mild winters of much of Zone 9a (especially coastal areas), they may not receive enough chill hours to flower reliably or at all. They are best suited to colder inland areas of Zone 9a or microclimates that experience more frost.

Q: When and how should it be pruned?
A: Prune immediately after flowering in late spring. Remove spent flower heads and cut out about one-third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage vigorous new growth, which will bear flowers in future years. Avoid late summer or fall pruning.
