Description

Cape Honeysuckle is a vibrant and fast-growing evergreen shrub that can be trained as a vine, prized for its spectacular display of fiery orange-red flowers during the cooler months. When many gardens are quiet, it bursts into bloom from fall through spring, producing dense clusters of tubular, trumpet-shaped flowers that are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. With its glossy, dark green foliage and vigorous, sprawling habit, it is an excellent choice for creating a colorful, informal hedge, a sprawling ground cover on slopes, or a dazzling floral screen when supported on a trellis or fence.

  • Brilliant Cool-Season Color: Blooms profusely from autumn through spring with vibrant clusters of orange-red to scarlet, trumpet-shaped flowers, providing essential nectar when few other plants are in bloom.

  • Top Hummingbird Attractor: A premier plant for attracting and sustaining hummingbird populations throughout the winter and early spring.

  • Versatile Growth Habit: Naturally grows as a large, sprawling shrub but can be easily trained as a climber on supports or pruned into an informal hedge or screen.

  • Fast-Growing & Evergreen: Provides quick coverage and year-round interest with its dense, glossy green foliage. Can reach 15-20 ft. as a vine or 6-8 ft. as a shrub.

  • Heat & Drought Tolerant: Once established, it is highly tolerant of heat, full sun, and periods of drought, making it ideal for water-wise landscapes in warm climates.

Faqs

Q: Is it a true honeysuckle (Lonicera)?
A: No. Despite its common name, Cape Honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis) is not related to true honeysuckles. It belongs to the Bignoniaceae family, which includes trumpet vines and jacarandas.

Q: How do I train it to climb?
A: To train it as a vine, provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or arbor. Gently tie the long, pliable young stems to the support to guide their direction. As it matures, it will begin to twine and support itself. Without support, it will form a large, mounding shrub.
