Bay Area–Based Nursery

We specialize in plants grown and delivered in their original pots and soil.
Because of their size and weight, our plants are not suitable for long-distance shipping and are delivered locally to ensure health and quality.

While delivery is limited to our local service area, we’re happy to support garden design and plant selection remotely.

For local plant professionals, we’re always glad to connect and explore ways to support your customers.

Emerald Fountain Canadian Hemlock is a refined, slow-growing, needled evergreen prized for its exceptionally narrow, columnar form and dense, dark green foliage. A superior cultivar of the native Canadian hemlock, it maintains a natural, tight, upright habit without shearing, making it a superb alternative to columnar arborvitae . Its soft, short needles are arranged in flat, lacy sprays, with distinctive white bands on the undersides that add subtle texture. An excellent choice for small gardens, vertical accents, foundation plantings, and formal hedges, it brings year-round elegance and structure to shaded landscapes .

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: How large does Emerald Fountain Canadian Hemlock grow?
A: It is a slow to medium grower, typically reaching 6-10 feet in height and only 2-3 feet in width at maturity . Its narrow, columnar habit makes it ideal for small spaces and vertical accents where a broad-spreading evergreen would not fit.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: Emerald Fountain performs best in partial shade to full shade. It tolerates morning sun in cooler northern climates, but must be protected from hot afternoon sun, which will scorch its foliage . In the South (USDA zone 7 and warmer), it requires significant shade and consistently cool, moist conditions .

Q: How much water does it require?
A: This tree requires consistently moist, well-drained soil and is intolerant of drought. Water regularly, especially during establishment and extended dry periods . Prolonged drought can be fatal. A thick layer of mulch around the root zone helps retain moisture and keep the shallow roots cool .

Q: Is it deer resistant?
A: Yes, Canadian hemlocks are generally moderately resistant to deer browsing . However, in times of extreme scarcity, deer may still browse tender new growth. They are not considered a preferred food source.

Q: Is it a good choice for a privacy hedge?
A: Yes, it is an excellent choice for a formal or informal hedge . Its dense branching, narrow habit, and tolerance for shearing make it ideal for creating a living screen in shaded areas where other hedging plants fail . Space plants 2-3 feet apart for a solid hedge.

Q: How cold hardy is it?
A: It is reliably hardy in USDA zones 4-7. It thrives in cooler climates and dislikes the heat and humidity of the deep South (south of zone 6) . Foliage may scorch when temperatures consistently exceed 95°F (35°C) . It is not recommended for zone 8 or warmer.
