Description

Red Prince Weigela is a vibrant deciduous shrub prized for its profuse display of deep red, trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring. Its blooms are notably darker and richer than many other red weigelas, creating a striking visual impact. The dark green foliage provides a good backdrop and may develop purplish tints in fall. This upright, arching shrub is easy to grow and reliably reblooms sporadically throughout the summer, especially if spent flowers are lightly deadheaded. It attracts hummingbirds and makes an excellent addition to mixed borders or as a flowering hedge.

  • Profuse, Rich Red Spring Blooms: Produces an abundant crop of deep crimson-red, tubular flowers along its arching branches in late spring.

  • Attracts Hummingbirds: The nectar-rich, trumpet-shaped flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds.

  • Reliable Rebloomer: Often produces a second, lighter flush of flowers in mid to late summer, especially if old flower clusters are removed after the first bloom.

  • Easy-Care & Adaptable: Tolerates a wide range of soils, is drought-tolerant once established, and requires minimal pruning. Grows 5-6 feet tall and wide.

  • Versatile Landscape Use: Excellent as a flowering specimen, in mixed shrub borders, or for informal hedges.

Faqs

Q: When is the best time to prune it?
A: Prune for shape and size control immediately after the main spring bloom. It flowers on old wood (previous season's growth), so pruning later in the season would remove next year's flower buds. To encourage rebloom, deadhead spent flower clusters.

Q: How much sun does it need?
A: It blooms best in full sun (at least 6 hours). While it can tolerate partial shade, flowering will be significantly reduced, and the plant may become leggy.
