Size, shape and branching naturally vary

Description

The Candelabra Spurge is a majestic, tree-like succulent that makes a bold landscape statement. Its candelabra-shaped branches, adorned with striking marble-like variegation and dark spines, create a living sculpture of imposing beauty. For frost-free microclimates in the Bay Area, this fast-growing specimen can become a breathtaking focal point, evoking the drama of a desert garden with minimal water needs.

  • Develops a strong, central trunk that branches into a symmetrical, candelabra-like form, covered in a captivating pattern of yellow-green marbling on blue-green stems.

  • Grows rapidly into a large, tree-sized specimen, providing exceptional height and architectural presence in a short time for suitable landscapes.

  • Features prominent ridges with persistent dark brown spines, adding to its textured, sculptural quality and deterring casual contact.

  • Is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, thriving in the dry summer conditions of Zone 9a with deep, infrequent watering.

  • Caution: All parts contain a highly irritating milky sap; plant away from high-traffic areas and handle with extreme care (gloves, eye protection).

Faqs

Q: Is it cold hardy enough for my area in the Bay Area?
A: It is only reliably hardy in the warmest, most frost-free pockets of Zone 9a (typically right along the coast or in very protected urban gardens). Most inland areas experience frosts that can severely damage or kill it. It is best treated as a container specimen that can be moved to shelter in winter.

Q: How much space does it ultimately need?
A: It needs significant space, both vertically (20-30 ft) and horizontally. Do not plant near structures, sidewalks, or power lines. Its aggressive root system can also damage paving.

Q: What soil is absolutely essential?
A: Perfect drainage is non-negotiable. Plant on a mound or slope in a gritty, sandy soil mix. Heavy clay soil will hold water and cause fatal root rot, especially in winter.
