The Southern Magnolia is the quintessential, majestic evergreen tree of the South, equally at home in Bay Area gardens. It is celebrated for its enormous, fragrant, creamy-white blooms that contrast stunningly against its large, glossy dark green leaves with rusty-brown undersides. This slow-growing giant forms a dense, pyramidal canopy, making a bold and permanent architectural statement.

  • Produces iconic, extremely large (8-12 inch wide), intensely fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers from late spring through summer, with showy red seed cones following.

  • Features large, leathery, glossy dark green leaves with distinctive fuzzy, rusty-brown undersides that provide year-round beauty and texture.

  • Grows slowly but steadily into a large, dense, pyramidal to rounded evergreen tree, becoming a substantial and commanding presence in the landscape.

  • Prefers deep, acidic, well-drained soil and benefits from regular deep watering, especially during dry periods. Tolerates full sun to part shade.

  • Its large, leathery leaves can create significant litter as they slowly decompose; plant away from pools and highly manicured lawns.

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: Is it too big for a residential yard?
A: The standard species can become enormous (60-80 ft tall). It is only suitable for very large properties, parks, or estates. For most residential gardens, the dwarf cultivars like Little Gem or Teddy Bear are strongly recommended.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: In our typically alkaline Bay Area soil and water, Southern Magnolias often develop iron chlorosis, a yellowing of leaves due to inability to absorb iron. Treating the soil with chelated iron and using acidifying fertilizers can help correct this.

Q: Is Southern Magnolia evergreen?
A: Yes. It keeps its glossy green foliage year-round.

Q: How large does Southern Magnolia grow?
A: Mature trees commonly reach 40–60 feet tall, with some varieties staying more compact.

Q: When does it bloom?
A: Flowering typically occurs from late spring into summer.

Q: Is it good for privacy screening?
A: Yes. Its dense foliage makes it an excellent natural privacy tree.

Q: Does Southern Magnolia require special care?
A: It prefers well-drained soil and regular watering during establishment, but needs minimal maintenance once mature.
