Description

Phlomis lanata is a dense, compact evergreen shrub prized for its soft, woolly, gray-green foliage and whorls of hooded, yellow flowers. Native to the Mediterranean region (specifically Crete and Turkey), this drought-tolerant plant features upright stems covered in small, wrinkled, lance-shaped, gray-green leaves that are densely coated with soft, woolly hairs, giving the plant its species name "lanata" (meaning woolly). From late spring through summer, it produces distinctive, tiered whorls (verticillasters) of two-lipped, hooded, pale yellow to deep yellow flowers that rise above the foliage on upright stems. The flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. With its neat, compact, spreading habit and excellent tolerance for heat, drought, and poor soils, it is a superb choice for Mediterranean gardens, dry borders, rock gardens, coastal plantings, and as a low hedge or ground cover.

Faqs

Q: How is Compact Jerusalem Sage (Phlomis lanata) different from Purple Jerusalem Sage (Phlomis purpurea)?
A: Phlomis lanata is notable for its denser, more compact, spreading habit (2-3 ft tall, 4-6 ft wide vs. 4-6 ft tall), its soft, woolly foliage, and its yellow flowers (vs. purple-pink flowers). It is better suited for use as a low hedge or ground cover.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best flowering?
A: For the most abundant flower display and compact growth, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). It will tolerate very light shade but may become more open and flower less.

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. Water regularly during its first year to establish a deep root system. After that, it requires little to no supplemental water. Overwatering should be avoided.

Q: Does it attract pollinators?
A: Yes, the hooded yellow flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the summer.

Q: When should I prune it?
A: Prune after flowering in late summer to maintain shape and encourage denser growth. Light pruning only; avoid cutting into old, bare wood, as it may not resprout.

Q: Is it deer resistant?
A: Yes, the soft, woolly, aromatic foliage is generally resistant to deer browsing, making it an excellent choice for gardens with deer pressure.
