Description

Pyracantha coccinea 'Lowboy' is a low-growing, evergreen shrub prized for its dense, spreading habit, profuse white spring flowers, and abundant, long-lasting orange berries. This compact selection of the classic firethorn is specifically bred for its low, wide form, reaching only 2-3 feet tall but spreading 6-8 feet wide, making it an excellent ground cover and low barrier plant . In spring, it produces masses of small, white, five-petaled flowers in flat-topped clusters (corymbs) that cover the arching branches, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. By late summer through fall and into winter, the flowers give way to dense clusters of small, pea-sized, bright orange to orange-red berries that are highly ornamental and persist for months, providing essential food for birds . The vigorous, sprawling branches are armed with sharp thorns, making this plant an effective, impenetrable barrier. With excellent drought tolerance once established, adaptability to a range of soils, and resistance to fire blight, it is an outstanding choice for ground cover, low hedges, slope stabilization, erosion control, and wildlife gardens.

Faqs

Q: How is 'Lowboy' different from other Pyracantha varieties?
A: 'Lowboy' is distinguished by its low, spreading, wide growth habit, reaching only 2-3 feet tall but 6-8 feet wide, making it ideal for ground cover and low barriers, whereas most other pyracanthas grow as tall, upright shrubs (6-15+ feet tall).

Q: Does it produce berries?
A: Yes, it produces dense clusters of small, pea-sized, bright orange to orange-red berries in late summer that persist through fall and winter, providing months of ornamental color and food for birds.

Q: Is it thorny?
A: Yes, like all pyracanthas, the branches are armed with sharp thorns, making 'Lowboy' an effective, nearly impenetrable barrier for security or to keep pets and wildlife contained.

Q: How large does it get?
A: It has a low, wide-spreading habit, reaching 2-3 feet in height and 6-8 feet in spread at maturity.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best flowering and fruiting?
A: For the most abundant flowers and berries, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). It will tolerate partial shade, but flowering and fruiting will be reduced.
