Description

Teucrium fruticans is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub prized for its aromatic, silvery-gray foliage and profuse, soft blue to lavender-blue flowers. Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, this drought-tolerant plant features small, ovate to lance-shaped, gray-green leaves with woolly white undersides, giving the plant a striking silvery appearance. The leaves release a pleasant, herbaceous, slightly resinous scent when brushed. From late spring through summer, and often into early fall, it produces loose clusters of small, two-lipped, tubular flowers in shades of pale blue to lavender-blue, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators . With its upright, somewhat sprawling habit and excellent tolerance for heat, drought, poor soils, and coastal conditions, it is a superb choice for Mediterranean gardens, dry borders, coastal plantings, low hedges, slopes, and as a colorful accent. It responds very well to pruning and can be shaped into a dense hedge or allowed to grow naturally as a loose, textural shrub.

Faqs

Q: How large does Bush Germander get?
A: It is a vigorous shrub, typically reaching 4-8 feet in height and 5-8 feet in spread. It can be pruned to maintain a smaller size, such as a low hedge.

Q: How much sun does it need for the best flowering and foliage color?
A: For the most abundant flower display and the most intense silvery-gray foliage, plant in full sun(at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily). In partial shade, it will become leggy and the foliage will be greener.

Q: How much water does it need?
A: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. Water regularly during its first year to establish a deep root system. After that, it requires little to no supplemental water. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Q: How should I prune Bush Germander?
A: It responds very well to pruning. For a dense, formal hedge, prune in late winter or early springbefore new growth begins, and again lightly after flowering. To maintain a more natural shape, prune after flowering to control size and encourage bushiness.

Q: Does it attract pollinators?
A: Yes, the soft blue to lavender-blue flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the summer.

Q: Is it deer resistant?
A: Yes, the aromatic, slightly resinous foliage is generally resistant to deer browsing, making it an excellent choice for gardens with deer pressure.

Q: Is it tolerant of coastal conditions?
A: Yes, as a Mediterranean native, it is well-adapted to coastal conditions, tolerating salt spray and windy sites.
