Ylang Ylang is the legendary source of one of the world's most important perfume essences. This fast-growing tropical tree produces clusters of uniquely fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers whose complex scent is a cornerstone of the perfume industry. In the Bay Area, it is strictly a container specimen or greenhouse plant for all but the very warmest, most frost-free microclimates.

Q: Can I grow it outdoors year-round anywhere in the Bay Area?
A: Virtually nowhere. It might survive with extreme protection in the warmest, most urban parts of Sunset zone 17. For 99% of gardeners, successful cultivation is only possible with a pot-in, pot-out seasonal routine or in a dedicated greenhouse.

Q: How do I get it to flower indoors?
A: It requires very bright, direct light (a south-facing window or strong grow lights), high humidity (use a humidifier), and warm temperatures. Even with ideal care, flowering may be less prolific indoors than in its native tropics.
