Bay Area–Based Nursery

We specialize in plants grown and delivered in their original pots and soil.
Because of their size and weight, our plants are not suitable for long-distance shipping and are delivered locally to ensure health and quality.

While delivery is limited to our local service area, we’re happy to support garden design and plant selection remotely.

For local plant professionals, we’re always glad to connect and explore ways to support your customers.

The White Sapote is a hidden gem of the subtropical orchard, often called the "ice cream fruit" for its luxuriously smooth, custard-like flesh and complex, dessert-like flavor. This attractive, fast-growing tree produces apple-sized, greenish-yellow fruit with a thin skin. Inside, the creamy white to pale yellow flesh offers a rich, sweet taste with delightful notes of banana, peach, vanilla, and citrus. Easy to grow, relatively cold-tolerant, and highly productive, it's a must-have for fruit enthusiasts seeking something uniquely delicious beyond the ordinary.

  • Renowned for its exceptionally smooth, creamy, custard-like texture and rich, complex flavor.

  • Flesh is sweet with a delightful blend of banana, peach, vanilla, and pear notes.

  • A fast-growing, evergreen tree that can begin fruiting within 3-4 years of planting.

  • More cold-tolerant than many tropicals, surviving brief temperatures down to the mid-20s °F (-4°C) once mature.

  • Self-pollinating and bears abundant crops of apple-sized fruit.

  • Can grow large but responds very well to pruning, making it manageable for home gardens.

Flavor Profile:

  • Flavor: Sweet and rich, with a predominant flavor of vanilla custard, banana, and peach, and a subtle, refreshing citrus finish.

  • Texture: Ultra-smooth, soft, and creamy—like the finest pudding or ripe avocado.

  • Best Uses: Primarily a sublime fresh-eating fruit, best scooped straight from the skin. Perfect for blending into smoothies, mousses, or "ice cream." Can be used in pies or cheesecakes.

Knowing how we measure the size?

Knowing how we measure the size?

When browsing our plants, you may notice size terms such as Gallon, Multi, or Stand. These describe how a plant is grown, containerized, or structured at the time of sale — not just its height. Understanding these terms will help you choose the right plant for your space and expectations.

🌱 Gallon Size (Container Size)

Gallon refers to the size of the nursery container the plant is currently growing in (e.g. 1 Gallon, 5 Gallon, 15 Gallon).

  • A larger gallon size generally means:

    • A more established root system

    • A sturdier plant

    • Faster visual impact after planting

  • Example:

    • 5 Gallon: Ideal for residential gardens, easy to handle, good balance of value and maturity

    • 15 Gallon: More mature, provides quicker results in the landscape

Note: Gallon size does not guarantee a specific height, as growth varies by species.

🌳 Multi (Multi-Trunk / Multi-Branch Form)

Multi indicates the plant has multiple trunks or main stems growing from the base.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Ornamental trees

    • Feature plants

    • Japanese maples, olives, crepe myrtles, etc.

  • Why choose Multi:

    • Fuller, more sculptural appearance

    • Strong visual presence even at younger ages

    • Popular for design-focused landscapes

🌲 Stand (Single-Trunk / Standard Form)

Stand (short for Standard) refers to a single, dominant trunk with a raised or naturally formed canopy.

  • Commonly used for:

    • Shade trees

    • Street trees

    • Orchard and structural plantings

  • Why choose Stand:

    • Clean, classic tree form

    • Easier clearance for walkways and lawns

    • Preferred for long-term structure and uniformity

🌿 Choosing the Right Size

  • If you want instant impact → larger Gallon, Multi form

  • If you want long-term structure → Stand form

  • If you want flexibility and value → mid-size Gallon containers

If you’re unsure which size or form fits your project, our team is happy to help you select the best option based on your space, timeline, and design goals.

FAQs

Q: How do I know when it's perfectly ripe?
A: The fruit will soften slightly, similar to a ripe avocado. The skin may lighten from green to a yellowish-green, and the fruit will detach easily with a gentle twist. It ripens best off the tree. If it's still firm, let it sit at room temperature until it yields to gentle pressure.

Q: Are the seeds or skin edible?
A: No. The skin is bitter and inedible. The seeds are also not for consumption. Simply cut the fruit in half and scoop out the sweet, creamy flesh with a spoon.

Q: Is it related to Black Sapote (chocolate pudding fruit)?
A: Only by common name. They are in different botanical families. White Sapote (Casimiroa edulis) is in the Rutaceae (citrus) family and has creamy, vanilla-flavored flesh. Black Sapote (Diospyros digyna) is in the Ebenaceae (persimmon/ebony) family and has dark, chocolate-pudding-like flesh.

Q: How do I keep the tree a manageable size?
A: Annual pruning after harvest is highly effective. You can safely cut it back by one-third to one-half each year. This encourages a strong structure, maintains a height of 10-15 feet for easy picking, and often improves fruit size and quality.
